The Lower Cohase region includes four towns situated on either side of the Connecticut River. The West side of the river is Orange County, Vermont and the towns of
Bradford and
Newbury. The East side of the river is
Grafton County, New Hampshire and the towns of
Haverhill and
Piermont.
These four towns have been linked since colonial times and continue to cooperate and compete today despite being in two different states.
Three highway bridges
cross the river and link these towns (at the North, in the middle, and at the Southern end of the region). Residents live, work, and shop both sides of the river. The local fire mutual aid district includes departments from both sides of the river and often the departments which work the most closely are from different states. Police can and do respond across the river. The regional ambulance service also serves both sides of the river. Many students attend school (high school or vocational) on the 'other' side of the river. Truly, the beautiful river valley we share is a uniting factor in our lives.
Each of our communities is distinct. We are four towns, with over 10 villages. We have prepared an
Historical Tour through seven of these villages. If you are looking for more 'factual' information about our towns and villages, click any of the town links below.
