Explore the Region

Whether you are planning a vacation, just visiting, or looking for that special place to settle down, the Lower Cohase Region has lots to offer for everyone. We are not a home to mega-resort facilities or glitzy tourist attractions. That’s just not our style, and we think it’s a good thing. But if you are the type of person inclined to travel your own path to the enjoyment of nature, art, community, and a true quality of life apart from the masses, this just might be your kind of place.

The Lower Cohase Region possesses wondrous natural beauty that beckons you to get outdoors and partake. The centerpiece of our Region is the gorgeous Connecticut River Valley. Largely protected from the advances of development, the river offers countless recreational opportunities. Kayaking, fishing and pleasure boating abound. Access to the river is easy via state-maintained launches on both sides of the river. For those who prefer wheels, the valley and surrounding hills offer some of the most beautiful cycling (both pedaling and motor) to be found anywhere. For the sportsperson, the region hosts an abundance of prime hunting and fishing grounds for year-round enjoyment. If hiking is your love, then feel free to roam. From simple country roads to the magnificent trails of the nearby White and Green Mountain National Forests, plus local conservation areas, you will never run out of opportunities to commune with our gorgeous surroundings.

If you think winter is a time to simply hunker inside and endure the season, think again! The Lower Cohase Region offers countless outdoor activities to enjoy. Within just one hour of our Region one can downhill ski or snowboard at some of the prime resorts of the East, including Loon, Sunapee, Burke Mountain, Cannon, and Bretton Woods. Snowmobiling is everywhere, with wonderfully groomed trails accessible from our region for touring literally all over New Hampshire and Vermont. Snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, winter hiking, and ice fishing are also popular. The locals can always offer advice on great places to experience.

If the arts are more to your liking, you might start with the Alumni Hall Cultural and Interpretive Center in Haverhill Corner, New Hampshire. This 19th century Grafton County Courthous has been preserved and revitalized to offer visitors a welcome venue for learning about local history, as well as hosting arts programs and civic events. Old Church Community Theater in Bradford, Vermont offers a number of fine productions throughout the year featuring committed local performers. They also invite newcomers to the region or to theater to get involved. And within a 45-minute drive, there are at least 5 more community theaters and a professional live theater. Just a short drive from the Lower Cohase area, one can also partake of several museums and performing arts theaters in the Dartmouth College region. In addition, nearly every village in our area is home to a fine local library, offering a variety of insights into local history.

Do you just like to get out of the house and partake of the community? We have an abundance of that as well. From lobster bakes to wild game suppers, from square dancing to whole hog barbeque, from church suppers to a drive-in movie theater with double features throughout the season, there is always something to do.

No matter what your interests, we think you’ll find our well-kept secret called the Lower Cohase Region to your liking. It is a special place. Like many of us, you may find you don’t wish to leave.
